The Social Science Faculty focuses on the human being and his environment. In the quest to understand human behavior and solve societal problems, the modern social scientist in his search for solutions has discarded his traditional approach to knowledge for refined and scientific alternative that is based on the use of modern research tool. Statistics, computer, questionnaires and related sophisticated tools have been found useful in the search for solutions to human problems.
Consequently, the faculty of Social Sciencess intends to train students who will be able to use these modern tools to study human behavior, his social, cultural environment and finds solutions to the numerous burning social issues facing human society.

Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of the faculty include inter alia

  • To provide a through training in both the technique and application of political and socio economic analysis with particular reference to the problems of Nigeria with the African and world context.

  • To produce creative, skilled, self-reliant and well-behaved graduates who can make meaningful contributions to individual and national development.

  • To produce graduates imbued with critical judgments and independent mind to assist in         proffering solutions to social problems

Rationale for the Economics programme is to produce sound economists and also provide relevant lecturers
for undergraduates in (i) other departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences (ii) Faculty of Education and
(iii) Faculty of Management Sciences.




Our mission is to prepare students in economic theory and principles, skills as well as methodology that
will equip them to fit into the public and private sectors where they can help discuss and solve economic
problems at the national and international levels.





Geography deals with the spatial distribution and attributes of phenomena on the earth’s surface. Our philosophy is to train to understand the nature, structure, and physiography of and the processes of the physical and human induced alterations on the earth’s surface and to equip them with the necessary skills to understand and proffer solutions to natural and human induced problems. The programme focus on optional mobilization of the natural resources of our immediate environment and the environmental impacts of our various development endeavous. It seeks to inculcate in the students the art of sustainable development of the total environment. Generally the focus is to train geographers who can make meaningful and objective contribution to national development, resolve an made environmental problems arising from environmental abuse and advance the principles and practices of sustainable development of the surface of the earth.


Aim and Objectives

The broad aim is to train geographers who can make spatial and objective contribution to national development, resolve man-made environmental problems arising from the environmental abuse and made the surface of the earth to be functionally appropriate and sustainable.

Objectives of the Programme
The objectives of the academic programme include:

To give students a deep knowledge of the principles of spatial temporal organization of natural and human phenomena on the earths surface.

To make students appreciate the nature, structure, distribution and management needs of natural resources and the impact of these on human activities and problems.

To equip students with suitable analytical and technical skills required for tackling problems of spatial planning and development and management of environment resources.

To enable students to specialize in areas relevant to national development particularly, planning and environmental studies.

To stimulate an awareness for imbibing skills for environmental conservation, restoration and sustainability




Philosophy and Objectives

The four year programme leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc Degree in Political Science) takes very seriously the necessity of training people of independent mind and critical judgment. It is intended mainly to provide men and women who will be technically and ideologically equipped to play leading roles in government and other related fields in the country.
The main areas of the discipline – Political theory. Public Administration, International Relations, and Development studies, are brought into sharp focus to give both the career and academic oriented students a solid foundation for growth and development in all the relevant areas. It is hoped that the course will enhance good governance, national development, sustainable international relations and the individual’s cense of social responsibility.
The philosophy of the Department seeks to promote the actualization of Nigeria’s national philosophy of education, namely:

  • A free and democratic society;
  • A just and egalitarian self-reliant nation;
  • A great and dynamic economy; and
  • A land of bright and full opportunities for all citizens

The philosophy of the department is anchored on the following objectives:

  • To promote popular consciousness;
  •  To contribute to a clear understand of the development question in Africa and Nigeria;
  • To foster a nationalist and Africa respective on socio-political and economic issues/problems;
  • To foster good relationship and better understanding among the different ethnic nationalists in Nigeria;
  • To equip students with the scientific and analytical tools required for the understanding of the world and social engineering; and
  • To enhance the acquisition of knowledge and skills for national development




In collaboration with other academic discipline and n partnership with both public and private organizations in Nigeria, the vision of the Department of Sociology, Niger Delta University in the emergence of a self-reliant and viable Nigeria, sustained on the intellectual and research contributions of sociologists.



Our mission is the production of a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge to make their contributions to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community; having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in the field of Social Sciencess in general; an din the various sub-fields of sociology in particular.


  1. To inculcate in students a sound knowledge of sociology, an appropriation of its theories and applications indifferent socio-cultural content; and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying the workings of society.
  2. To cultivate in students the ability of apply their sociological knowledge an skills in the understanding of and solution to societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere.
  3. To provide students with relevant knowledge and skill base from which they can proceed to further studies in special area of sociology or multi-disciplinary area involving Sociology.
  4. To instill in students an appreciation of the importance of Sociology in socio-cultural, legal, economic, political, industrial and environmental contexts self employment.

To be considered for admission into the first degree programme, candidates should

1. Have five credit pass in not more than two sittings in any of the following examinations;

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level Examination
  • West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE),
  • National Examination Council (NECO),
  • National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) or their equivalents

2. Obtain the minimum cut-off score in UME conducted by JAMB
